Non-Destructive Method for Estimating Seed Weights from Intact Peanut Pods Using Soft X-ray Imaging

In the U.S., peanut farmers receive premium prices for crops with high seed grades. One component of grade is proportion weight to that pod hulls and other matter. Seed size are also important traits food processors. Current methods evaluating require opening time-consuming labor-intensive. this study, a non-destructive efficient method determine weights was investigated. X-ray images total 513 pods from three commercial cultivars, each representing market types, were taken using soft imaging system. The region interest image, seeds, extracted two ways, manually differential evolution segmentation algorithm. comprehensive attenuation index (CAI) value calculated segmented regions interest. Lastly, linear regression models established between CAI. results demonstrated technology, coupled algorithm, may be used estimate efficiently intact pods.
